Willingness, on the other hand, has the qualities of openness, allowing, and being present with what is there to be felt, sensed, or witnessed. Willingness is experienced as an ongoing process, not as a waiting for something to change to a better thing if we are tolerant enough. Clients often confuse willingness with a feeling. One does not have to feel willing in order to be willing. Willingness is also not about wanting. A client does not have to want to feel or think something in order to be willing to do so.

For a book-length treatment of RFT—be warned, it’s a tough read—see Hayes et al. (2001). 22 Learning ACT Chapter 2 DEVELOPING WILLINGNESS/ ACCEPTANCE When suffering knocks at your door and you say there is no seat for him, he tells you not to worry because he has brought his own stool. —Chinua Achebe, from Arrow of God (1967, p. 84) Key targets for willingness/acceptance: >> Help clients let go of the agenda of control as applied to internal experience. >> Help clients see experiential willingness as an alternative to experiential control.

The process of developing acceptance usually involves two major clinical foci: 1) undermining experiential control as a dominant method of relating to one’s self and the world, in order to create an initial openness and as a precursor to the rest of the work; and 2) structuring opportunities for the client to actively practice and intentionally develop willingness skills in the presence of previously avoided internal experience. Both of these steps are intended to foster psychological flexibility; that is, the ability to contact the present moment more fully as a conscious human being, and to change or persist in behavior when doing so serves valued ends.
