This metacognitive knowledge, as well as the two other types, helps the learner to recognize when particular strategies are appropriate. Attitudes The study of attitudes is central to explaining individual differences. They are inextricably linked to the teaching—learning process, because the attitudes of learners towards the teacher, the language or school are factors that bear a substantial influence on the learning process. Depending on the nature of these attitudes, language learning effectiveness will vary accordingly.

These researchers have proposed different taxonomies all grouped under the three categories. The difference among the several taxonomies lies in the strategies identified in the different research projects. The diaries were written in English.
